Heading onto the coast where land, fog, surf and wind combine, the Skeleton Coast feels remote, wild and dramatic. On the tour you’ll track the coastline, visit shipwrecks, seal colonies, wind-swept plains and deserted beaches where ancient dunes rise out of the sand. You might explore the Skeleton Coast National Park, the ubiquitous fog rolling in from the Atlantic, and the interplay between land and sea.
Attractions include: the wreck of the Eduard Böhme (a famous shipwreck), the Cape Cross seal colony, the Himba fishing communities, the vast plains of dune and gravel. Local trivia: the fog along the coast is so persistent that mariners once called it “the land God made in anger” — and in fact Namibia’s coat-of-arms features a Welwitschia plant which thrives in that fog.
In short: expect a sense of vastness, raw coastline, some history, and that special feeling of being at the edge.
